A Segmented strategy breaks a forecast into a sequence of segments. Each segment has its own data partition filter, forecast method and aggregation, so different parts of your portfolio can each be forecast with the approach that suits them. For example, one segment can handle a cleanup level, another an item-group rollup, and the rest individual item groups.
A Segmented strategy can now have up to 10 segments, up from 5.
- Strategies with 5 or fewer segments, including ones saved before this change, work exactly as before. Nothing is migrated or reforecast.
- The pyramid level limit is separate and stays at 5.
Add segments to a strategy
- Go to Demand Planner > Forecasting and open the Strategy tab.
- Click Adjust Strategy above the grid. The Edit Forecast Strategy drawer opens.
- Under Forecast Type, select Segmented.
- For each segment:
- Click Edit data partition filter to choose which data the segment covers.
- Choose the Method.
- Optionally choose an Aggregation.
- Click + Add Segment to add the next segment, up to 10.
- Click Apply.
Each segment also has a toggle to turn it on or off, a handle to drag it into a different order, and a delete icon.
If you try to add an eleventh segment, the drawer refuses it and shows a message that you can add up to 10 segments.
Plan for generation time
A Segmented run pulls and prepares input data separately for each segment. More segments mean more work and memory for the run, especially when segments have broad or overlapping filters, so generation takes longer as you add segments. Using all 10 segments on a large dataset can take considerably longer to generate. This is expected.
To keep runs fast:
- Use the fewest segments that give each part of the portfolio the method it needs.
- Keep each segment's filter targeted, and avoid filters that overlap.
