Utilization Capacity

Utilization Capacity

Overview

The Utilization tab shows how much of each resource's available capacity is being used, broken down from Location down to Resource down to Item. This lets you see not just whether a resource is overloaded, but which specific items are driving that overload, so you can act on it directly instead of switching to a separate document to investigate.

Reading the Grid

Each level shows three rows:
  1. Utilization %: Production Hours divided by Available Hours.
  2. Production Hours: hours actually scheduled at that level.
  3. Available Hours: total hours available at that level.

Child rows roll up to their parent. A location's Utilization % reflects all of its resources combined, and a resource's Utilization % reflects all of the items produced on it combined.

Example: if Bottling 1 shows a utilization of 2,047% for a quarter, that means the current plan is asking that resource to produce roughly twenty times more than it can physically handle in that time. This isn't a scheduling squeeze, it's a sign the plan cannot be executed as written. Something has to change: the timeline, the resource assignment, or the plan itself.

Using the Drill-Down

If a resource is overloaded, expand it to see which items are consuming its capacity, and how much each one contributes. This tells you what to act on: check whether the item causing the overload can be produced on a different resource at the same location, and if that location doesn't have one, check whether another location does.

Filtering by Item or Group

Selecting an item or group in the item tree filters the Utilization tab to show only the resources that item can actually be produced on, rather than every resource across the location. This matters most at locations with a large number of resources, where most planners only need to see the small subset relevant to the items they're reviewing.

Switching Time Buckets

The Utilization tab supports Weekly, Monthly, Week Numbers, Yearly, and custom period views, the same time bucket options available elsewhere in the Planning Worksheet.

Warning and Overload Indicators

  1. A ⚠ icon indicates the resource has no valid capacity defined for that period.
  2. A cell shown in red indicates utilization over 100%, meaning the resource is overloaded for that period.

The Utilization tab is read-only. Changes to production or capacity are made elsewhere in the Planning Worksheet and reflected here automatically.
